We don't just build systems. We teach you to see them.
Structured workshops for business owners and senior leaders: how to map your own operation, cost its bottlenecks, judge where AI genuinely belongs, and build a business that runs on systems rather than memory. Every programme has defined learning objectives and measurable outcomes, and every capability we teach stays with your team after we leave.
Map Your Own Operation
For owners and senior leaders of businesses with 5 to 100 staff.
Learning objectives
Participants learn to map how work actually moves through a business: identifying every system, handoff, and exception in a core process; distinguishing the documented process from the real one; and recognising where manual handling, re-keying, and key-person dependency hide.
Measurable outcomes
By the end of the session, each participant has produced a current-state map of one core process in their own business, named and costed at least three bottlenecks in it at a loaded labour rate, and ranked them by return. The maps and costing method are reusable on every other process in the business.
AI Literacy for Business Leaders
For owners, directors, and senior managers making technology decisions.
Learning objectives
Participants learn the working difference between deterministic systems and AI: code executes rules and fails loudly; AI follows instructions with high probability, never certainty, and fails silently. From that foundation: which business tasks suit rules, which suit AI, which need a human in the loop, and how to question any vendor's AI claims before spending.
Measurable outcomes
By the end of the session, each participant can classify the tasks in their own operation into rules, AI, and human-review categories, has applied the evaluation framework to one live decision facing their business, and leaves with a written question set for assessing any AI proposal put in front of them.
A Business That Runs Without You
For owners thinking about growth, succession, or an eventual sale.
Learning objectives
Participants learn why a business that runs on systems rather than key-person knowledge is calmer to operate, simpler to hand over, and commands a premium at sale, taught by an owner who has been on that side of a sale. The session covers identifying key-person dependencies, sequencing systemisation, and what acquirers actually examine.
Measurable outcomes
By the end of the session, each participant has produced a key-person risk register for their own business, identified the three dependencies that most constrain growth or sale value, and drafted a sequenced plan to move each into a documented system.
Teaching is built into how we work.
Every First Light engagement transfers capability, not just software. Our Operations Review is a facilitated session run with the leadership team, not a report written about them: owners learn the mapping and costing method as the review applies it to their business. Every build ends with structured handover training and documentation written so the client's own people can run, question, and extend what was delivered. The measure we hold ourselves to is simple: after we leave, the business understands itself better than before we arrived.
Taught by people who've done it.
David Walker
A finance and banking background, then built and sold a national veterinary retail business. David teaches the operating and enterprise-value material from direct experience: systemising a business, running it on the systems, and selling it. He has facilitated operations reviews with leadership teams across construction, manufacturing, logistics, distribution, and professional services.
Shule Going
A career building and delivering systems, including technical consulting for some of Shopify's largest merchants. Shule teaches the systems and AI material: how software actually behaves, where automation belongs, and how to hold vendors to account. He is accountable for every handover and training session First Light delivers.
